May the 4th Be With You!

Today we celebrated Star Wars day in a couple different ways!  Nana Rosemary watched the kids for a little bit and let us sneak away for a nice lunch together at Firebirds Rocky Mountain Grill.  She took the kids to one of their favorite places for lunch, Subway!  I think we got the better deal, particularly considering their signature Double Black Diamond martini (not as crazy as it sounds, but definitely a winner for pineapple fans!) but Brian was clearly elated to go to Subway. 🙂  Later, we packed up and went to Durham for Star Wars Day baseball with the Durham Bulls.  They were having a charity auction for customized R2-D2 jerseys, with all proceeds benefiting the Autism Society of North Carolina.  We want to support them, so we did our part and helped run up the bidding on a couple jerseys, but once the bids got into the multiple-hundreds of dollars, we had to bow out of the auction.  The Bulls did a great job entertaining the kids, with lots of action on the field, using Star Wars characters’ photos on the player stats screens, and even delivered a couple home runs, so the kids could see the famous bull sign wag its tail and breathe smoke.  The kids enjoyed all sorts of classic ball park treats, and I gave in and hit the gift shop on the way out.  I got one of the last pairs of functioning souvenir lightsabers, and the kids both begged for a Durham Bulls pennant to hang in their rooms.  Lucky them, we are suckers!  They really enjoyed the walk back to the car, waving their lightsabers, striking their best Jedi poses, and taking in the sights at the American Tobacco Campus.  Our local NPR affiliate broadcasts from there, and we got to see the famous Story Corps mobile recording unit, which is in residence here for a week or two.  I think it would be really cool to do that one day, maybe when Brandon and I are retireees or something, have the kids interview us for Story Corps.  I guess until then, we’ll need to make sure we lead lives worthy of documenting for the Library of Congress! 😉

American Tobacco Campus – nice place to walk not such a nice sponsor. We saw one baseball game at Sky Sox stadium this summer.
