Today we were back out at Grandmother’s house to finally wrap up the scanning project. Before heading out, we had a little playtime at home. We’d been watching some SNL Best-Of videos, and Brian had really taken a liking to Dana Carvey’s “Choppin’ Broccoli” bit. Kendall was baking her cookies, while Brian was decorating the piano with play broccoli and recreating the scene his own way! Then, we headed out to Z-town. Brandon and I finished up the scanning, while the kids played with Rosemary and Sytse. They shared their favorite Dragon movie and TV show with them, and Brian made a nice picture of his favorite scene. We finally finished up, and left the originals in sorted piles by family for everyone. On the way to Rosemary’s, I took a few moments to myself and went down to the pond, just snapping photos left and right. I’d been taking pictures of various things, as well, when Charlotte or Rosemary told me about them. I’ve included some here. (Anyone know what Grandmother’s Oneida flatware pattern is? I’ve been meaning to figure it out.) I had been telling Brandon about how Granddaddy loved the Sweet Betsy bush, and as we were leaving, I took one last look at it–lo and behold, there were just a few blooms left! It was so special to inhale that fragrance one more time. Sweet Betsy, Dial soap, Grandmother’s cornbread, buttermilk biscuits made in a wooden bowl.. So many linked memories. As I approached Mom’s house, I saw the crabapple tree had fruit on it. Mom grew it from a graft of the crabapple trees that were at Granny’s house in Raleigh, so long ago. I told her that I remembered she made crabapple jelly from them, and it was the most amazing pink color, and tangy-sweet flavor. She said she would make it again! (Update: She did! The kids loved it, too! I have two more jars in the pantry.)

At Replacements, LTD you can upload a photo of one of the forks from your grandmother’s silverware and they will tell you the name of the pattern. We like the broccoli skit, too and Brian should watch the Dan Aykroyd skit of his Julia Child “I cut the dickens out of my hand”. You have many nice memories of your grandmother.
