Record Store Day!

Record Store Day!

I seem to have been bitten by the record collector bug once again, and I’ve been upgrading my turntable and working on creating a database of all our records and CDs.  I decided to share some of my hobby with Brian today, and took him with me to go celebrate Record Store Day at a couple of our local independent record shops!  There aren’t too many left these days, but two of my old favorites are still kicking–Schoolkids Records and Nice Price Books.  We went to Nice Price first, and Brian enjoyed looking through the record bins with me.  He spied a classic Star Wars “Empire Strikes Back” storybook on a low shelf, and ran to go grab it–he could hardly believe his find!  We had to get this prize and a couple of records, too.  Afterward, I figured we could use a treat, so we headed next door to Cup A Joe, where Brian got a mango smoothie and a brownie, and I had a latte and my favorite lemon poppyseed bread (theirs is the best in the world, truly!)  He felt like a pretty grown up little man, hanging out in the coffee shop.  🙂  He started talking to the lady next to us and had to show off his book!

Next up was a trip to Schoolkids, which was super crowded, due to having live in-store performances.  We had to park a few blocks away, and enjoyed the nice spring day as we walked up.  The store was crowded, but not terribly so, and I found my big score of the day, an ultra-limited edition Superchunk 7″!  Brian also spied an LP reissue of Oracular Spectacular, the debut album of one of his favorite bands, MGMT–up until this point, he’d only seen the cover art on the iPad, but he recognized it right away!  He’s loved those songs for years, so I had to say yes.

Record Store Day was only part of today’s fun, though–we also had a big time in the morning making things with Play Doh (mint chocolate, anyone?)  After we got home, Kendall was awake and the kids enjoyed playing with Magnatiles.  Kendall reached new heights in her tower building today, and I was pleased to see Brian helping her when she got frustrated that she couldn’t go any higher.  I just love to see them playing so well and working together!  Brian was happy to see dandelions springing up outside, and of course the azaleas are looking great this time of year, too!  Kendall and Brian both love the Stormy plushes that Brandon picked up for them.  I let Kendall wear a sundress today, even though it’s not technically warm enough for it yet..  she really wanted to wear it!  It’s amusing to me that such a little girl has such definite preferences already about what she wants to wear each day.  🙂

Your Magnatiles building looks like the Chrysler Building in NYC. Grandma Cheryl loves to browse in old record and book shops, too. I need to create a database of our music and books, too.
