RHCA Swag

I got my RHCA swag today! A glass plaque, laptop skin, and a shirt, custom-embroidered with my certification number. I’m happy to get these goodies, of course! However I’m a little ambivalent about the shirt. As a woman in technology, it always irks me when companies don’t offer ladies’ shirts. Tech company shirts are a staple of the industry, and to not even ask if someone would prefer a ladies’ style shirt seems awfully presumptive, to the point of being exclusionary. I know there are less women than men in tech roles, and I’m sure the percentage of women earning this cert is pretty low. But it’s definitely a non-zero value, and if you’re going to give away $50 custom shirts, come on.. Find a ladies’ equivalent. 🙂 It’s a very nice Ping golf shirt, and I’m sure it’d look great–on a dude. But for me, it’s down to my knees, and the short sleeves fall past my elbows. So, as proud as I am to have it, I’ll probably never wear it. Still a long ways to go, baby! At least in the technology sector. Okay, off my soapbox, here’s some cute pictures of Kendall!! She wanted to wear this infant headband today, and put it on herself (with just a little help) and said “pretty!” She loves this Hello Kitty Winter book that Brian picked out for her at the library–we all think it’s adorable, especially the hockey scene! I’ve put the whole set of 4 Hello Kitty season books on her wish list. 😉 They probably don’t seem all that educational, but in the week we’ve had this book, she’s learned so many words! She’s very proud of herself when she says “snowman” and “cocoa”! Also, the XKCD cartoon about Lego Minifigures seemed apropos–they’ve certainly outpaced the population of our house, and with as many as they churn out, I believe it! 🙂 And finally, Brian lost his fourth tooth today at school! We had a wacky evening and somehow I managed to miss taking pictures entirely.. 🙁 But, he tells us that it came out at lunchtime, and a helpful teacher gave him a Baggie to bring it home in. So now he’s missing the middle two on top, and the middle two on the bottom! He’ll be festive for Halloween, with his snaggy jack-o-lantern smile! 🙂

Congratulation on your achievement at Red Hat. Hospitals employ more women so they have appropriate gender/size clothing – I still have a nice polo shirt with the Memorial Hospital logo. Lands End caters to business apparel – maybe you could put a bug in someone’s ear.
