NC State Fair!

It’s my birthday today, and while I hope to have a relaxing one at some point in the (probably distant) future..  Today I happily signed on for a crazybusy one, full of family fun at the NC State Fair!  We’ve learned over the years that in order to avoid the worst of the crowds, it’s best to show up close to opening time, around 8am, on Sunday morning.  Yes, it’s a little painful to get everyone up and out that early, but the fairgrounds seem fresh and beautiful at that hour–it’s really sort of nice.  Plus, we always make a beeline to the food vendors that serve breakfast for a selection of delicious biscuits!  Country ham and sausage biscuits, those give us the energy we need to take on the day!  We met up with the Orazis again this year, and the kids were very happy to see each other.  We visited the prize-winning pumpkins, the animals, and Brian got to try milking a cow.  Afterward the boys saw a talking school bus that talked to the boys about safety, and a ventriloquist.  The PBS Kids tent was a hit as usual, with lots of fun games and activities inside  We managed to get in a good amount of snacks–Brian’s favorite was probably the chocolate-dipped frozen banana with sprinkles!  Being the sweet brother he is, he even shared some with his sister.  I got my favorite treat, an apple dumpling from Smitty’s, with vanilla “John Deere” ice cream!  And my favorite badness–the Dr. Vegetable sampler platter (deep fried, of course–but it’s all vegetables, so how bad can it be?) 😉  Kendall was pretty excited about her corn dog (with lots of ketchup!)  The kids all really liked the playhouse samples, especially a little pink one!  We parents were starting to get a little concerned we’d be leaving with one–but luckily the kids moved on when a military robot caught their interest.  Just about the time that the fair started to get really crowded, Kendall was getting burned out and ready for her nap.  So, we made a graceful exit, with only one impulse buy on the way out (a red samurai sword for Brian)!  We had an easy time of leaving, thanks to arriving early and parking close.  We made it home, dusty and a little foot-sore, but it was a great day!

  1. Grandma Cheryl and Grandpa Roger

Nice day at the NC State fair. It made Grandma hungry for all those yummy foods. Little known story about Grandpa and Grandma: When we were teenagers we rode a school bus 3 hours to Milwaukee to play with the Ithaca High School Band at the Wisconsin State Fair. After we presented our concert we could roam all over the fairgrounds until it was time to go home. It was a pretty amazing place for kids who barely ever ventured far from the farm.
