Days do not get much busier than this! The day started with another LEGO Club meeting for Brian. He built a really cool ship for his robot build! But, that wasn’t all, even for this morning. We also signed Brian up for a Dandelion Painting Art Class taught by his regular art teacher at Root, Tia Salton. We had been watching a lot of “Cosmos”, both the new version with Neil DeGrasse-Tyson and the classic version with Carl Sagan. If you’re not familiar with these series, the dandelion plays a significant role in the story and is the basis for the logo of the production company. So, with dandelions on the brain, it made sense to have an artistic outlet! The course was specifically focusing on Spring being in the air by making some 3D dandelion paintings in class on real artist canvases and using Lucas brand acrylic paint. This allowed Brian to make something to add some “spring” feeling to our home! We think he did a great job on it!
But now, we come to the title of this post. After LEGOs and art, Brian had his first ever house league hockey game! He got his brand new socks and jersey and went out there and played his heart out! The whole family, including Nana Rosemary, Pake Sytse, and Grandma Sue, came to cheer Brian on. Kendall wore her Hurricanes jersey and hair ribbon. She also enjoyed playing with Brian’s goaltender stick. He’s still getting used to the gear, and dad is still getting the hang of getting it all on him. The new jersey was so big, we actually had to go to the skate pro-shop to have them tailor the jersey down to something that wouldn’t be quite so baggy on him!
There is usually a shortage of goaltenders at every level. There are three teams in the house league, but there aren’t always three goalies available. Therefore, Brian had to play extra to cover the team that did not have a goaltender. As a result, he got to play every game and skip practice, something that he really likes. Although practice is good for development, most people would rather play games than practice and Brian is no different.
After the game, we went out to celebrate this momentous occasion by going out for a late lunch at a favorite Mexican restaurant of ours, Dos Taquitos. Nana Rosemary sponsored this trip out, and how could we say no?! 🙂 Dos Taquitos has a very funky decor, as you can see from the photos. It is also quite dark, so it makes for some interesting effects, especially with the black lights on in there. We even went super-special celebration by sharing a big fried ice cream for desert. And of course, Brian earned the cherry on top!
But, even then, we weren’t done. The kids wanted to go out to play, so we went to Root Elementary to play on the playground and track. Brian can make friends with anyone, so started playing with some kids that were already there racing and having a great time. Kendall wanted to ride her tricycle. Brian wanted to ride his bike. Brandon was trying his new bicycle that came from Steve. I was definitely curious if the whole “you never forget how to ride a bike” thing was true, and sure enough it is! It had probably been 20 years since I’d been on a bike, and it all just felt natural.
Quite the awesome day all-around!
