Air Show!

Today the whole family packed-up for a trip to the Wings Over Wayne air show in Goldsboro. It is held at Seymour Johnson AFB in alternating years with the MCAS Cherry Point air show in Havelock. Brian is still definitely into planes, and I think Kendall is starting to get into it as well. She was a real trooper getting over her rash post-antibiotics.  Getting to the flight-line wasn’t bad with the shuttle-bus.  But, after the Thunderbirds performed, there was such a rush to leave that it took a long, long time to get out.  Luckily some folks had mercy on us with two kids and let us go a little earlier.  The Air Force provided water for free, but we did see at least one person pass-out in the heat.  With the bad stuff reported, here were some of the really fun things we did:

  • sit in a a real helicopter
  • get a mist spray of water from the Air Force fire department
  • got close to a T-38, which was the “MiG plane” used in the movie “Top Gun”
  • watched lots of turboprop aircraft doing amazing tricks
  • and, of course, watched the Thunderbirds AWESOME as always performance

This was our first year with our travel chairs, which we purchased after the outdoor concert of John Williams tunes in Cary.  They are worth every penny.  It was extra nice because we found ourselves a nice spot under the starboard side of a Seymour Johnson F-15 that gave us a great view of the flightline and a bunch of shade for the hot afternoon.  Brian really wanted a Thunderbird and Blue Angel pin for his hat from Steve and we couldn’t say no.  Somehow, he also got me to buy him an F-14, which is odd since we were at an Air Force show and that’s a Navy aircraft, but I digress.  It helped that he thought that Kendall would like a pull-back Sky Shark aircraft, and he was right about that.
